Lumension Provides Industry Resources For New Endpoint Security Campaign

“Think Before You Renew AV” campaign reinforces why standalone antivirus can no longer be the sole security technology in modern endpoint environments.

relying on AV as your primary defense against malware is wholly ineffective

Today, as more than two million new malware signatures are identified each month and more organizations are falling prey to “zero-day” attacks, traditional antivirus simply cannot keep up in the malware arms race. In fact, 48 percent of organizations recently reported an increase in IT operating expenses, according to the 2011 State of Endpoint Risk study by the Ponemon Institute and commissioned by Lumension. Building on continued momentum, today Lumension®, a global leader in endpoint management and security, launched its “Think Before You Renew AV” campaign which further expands upon the company’s expertise in endpoint security and management.

A recent report on endpoint security by Aberdeen Group compared “best-in-class” and “laggard” organizations and found that while both best-in-class and laggard companies had deployed baseline security technologies such as AV, only the best-in-class organizations were more likely to be early adopters of best-in-class security technologies. Among those technologies were application controls, such as application whitelisting. One benefit achieved by best-in-class organizations was a year-over-year reduction in costs, leading to a savings of $24 per endpoint, which was achieved by decreasing the number of endpoint security incidents, as well as the average time needed to identify and address them.

“What we’ve been hearing from customers and prospects is that while antivirus is still a relevant technology within endpoint security and one that should be used consistently to help manage fast-spreading and widely known malware, relying on AV as your primary defense against malware is wholly ineffective,” said C. Edward Brice, Senior Vice President Worldwide Marketing, Lumension. “To this end, we are now meeting a real industry need by making resources available that IT security professionals can use when evaluating existing, traditional antivirus solutions, as well as more advanced solutions, such as application whitelisting, and endpoint management and security suites.”

While malware continues to grow at an exponential rate and hackers continue to become uniquely sophisticated in their attacks, many industry professionals, along with their customers and partners, are beginning to wonder how anyone can stay safe and ahead of the security game. In order to help answer this question, Lumension has launched a number of resources in its new “Think Before you Renew AV” campaign, including a online resource center that features “True Cost of Malware Calculator” which helps organizations identify the many direct and indirect malware-related cost drivers, above and beyond the operational cost of AV software.

“In recent months we have seen a new risk environment emerge and as a result we are urging companies of all sizes to stop and rethink their approach to IT security. For too long, data protection has been viewed from the center out but with the proliferation of mobile devices and open and collaborative 3rd party software, it really needs to be viewed from the perimeter in. Now is the time to take a step back and determine if the status quo approach to endpoint security is the right choice to make,” Brice said.

The campaign encourages companies to comparatively quote Lumension’s integrated suite-based endpoint protection solutions against their current AV renewal quote to better understand the true costs of various security tools. It also includes detailed demos of Lumension® Intelligent Whitelisting™, which is the only application whitelisting solution to combine the strengths of patch management and antivirus with new innovations in application control. In addition, use of the Lumension® Endpoint Management and Security Suite is shown in several “how-to” video vignette workflows including:

  •     Automating Your Whitelist Management
  •     Simplifying Whitelist Creation
  •     Eliminating Unwanted Applications
  •     Getting Application Visibility
  •     Reducing Local Admin Risk
