With the launch of CareControl® Rational has ensured the SelfCooking Center its place at the forefront of environmentally friendly technology for the hospitality industry. CareControl coupled with the SelfCooking Center's established reliability, ease of use and energy-efficient cooking system, brings a new level of green credentials.

Rational's new CareControl system means the SelfCooking Center never needs descaling, doesn't need a water filter and cleans itself thoroughly – but only when it needs to. This saves space, slashes running costs and helps protect the environment too, as the new 'care tabs' are fully biodegradable.

CareControl intelligently monitors what's being cooked and for how long, telling staff when to run the cleaning programme. At that point, the operator simply places the new 'care tabs' into the unit's drawer, detergent tablets into the basket in the cooking cabinet, and pushes the button – the SelfCooking Center does the rest.

A Rational SelfCooking Center reduces energy consumption by up to 60 percent compared to traditional cooking methods, says the company, and delivers significant savings – up to 15 percent – compared to traditional combis, because the SelfCooking Center monitors and optimises the cooking process every second of the cooking time.

This not only produces perfect results but also uses only just as much power as is needed to cook the food. And, because there's no limescale build-up, the steam used to cook the food is always as fresh and pure as possible guaranteeing perfect results time after time.

Rational has costed the power consumption of a fairly typical UK staff restaurant serving up to 200 meals a day, using two of the model 101 (10 grid) SelfCooking Center units. With conventional cooking equipment the electricity consumption could be up to 6,300 kWh per month, but with the SelfCooking Center the amount would be as little as 2,520 kWh.

"However, these figures do not take into account the extra savings through CareControl," explains Vic Brown, managing director of Rational UK. "The chef can close the kitchen at night while the SelfCooking Center cleans itself which means lighting, ventilation and other systems are not being used. But it's hard to factor all these savings for a definitive figure as they vary from kitchen to kitchen."
