The Distributed Energy Storage market is one of the most vibrant sectors of the electricity market and is set to reach $1.2bn by the end of the year. The growing penetration of intermittent and decentralised power generation in a number of countries around the world is causing considerable stresses on transmission systems designed for more consistent centralised power generation. Improving the efficiency of transmission through smart grids and optimised transmission infrastructure using energy storage creates considerable cost savings on generation fuel costs, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and slashing of power wastages related to backup and spinning reserves.

As battery technology costs continue falling, widespread deployment will become even more feasible. Against this backdrop, SMi's 2nd annual Distributed Energy Storage conference takes an in-depth look at how Utilities are integrating DES with case studies provided on the results of recent groundbreaking pilot projects, how technology challenges and policy updates have been addressed and lessons learnt to take forward and assist with future development.
