When it comes to demand response resource management, ECS has shown they have the experience, credibility, and know-how to get the job done
Buffalo, NY (Vocus) December 26, 2008
Energy Curtailment Specialists, Inc. (ECS), the largest privately-held demand response provider in North America, is pleased to announce that it has achieved significant progress towards the fulfillment of a direct contract they have entered into with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to bring demand response resources online via their DR3 program platform. ECS is issuing this report of success to counter recent news that some demand response providers initially involved in the DR3 program are no longer active.
Based in Buffalo, NY, ECS' proximity to Ontario has greatly assisted them in making their program a success to date. ECS was awarded a contract back in July 2008 and began marketing PowerPay! immediately thereafter. ECS has since enrolled some of the largest industrial loads in the province, based primarily upon its experience with this sector of the demand response marketplace and its straightforward and simplistic approach. PowerPay! Ontario provides a significant revenue stream to participants in the commercial and industrial sector who have the ability to reduce their demands when the electricity supplies in the Province become constricted. Notification is provided at least 5 hours in advance, giving participants adequate time to prepare to cut back. Aside from the financial benefit, participants also provide a larger community service by helping stabilize the grid at times when resources could be limited and preventing the need to bring highly polluting peak generating plants online.
From a demand response provider's perspective, the OPA's DR3 program experienced some "growing pains" during its first year, but for ECS, a private company with much more flexibility than some of the publicly-held companies in the market, the experience has been a tremendous one.
"As we see other providers dropping out of the program we understand that there is a significant burden on a company as large and experienced as ECS to become even more focused on making demand response a success in Ontario," said Paul Tyno, Executive Vice President of ECS. "Our greatest asset in dealing with what are typically large industrial electricity users in Ontario has been our significant experience over the years in the industrial sector which still to this day represents about 75% of all participating load in our programs."
These comments were echoed by Sandro Borghesi, director of Canadian operations for Washington Mills, located in Niagara Falls, ON. "When it comes to demand response resource management, ECS has shown they have the experience, credibility, and know-how to get the job done," said Borghesi. ECS was competitively selected by Washington Mills over other providers.
In response to some of the program modifications being made by the OPA, ECS Principal and Co-founder, Stephen Lynch, added, "As our Power Pay! Ontario program continues to grow we definitely want to commend the OPA for its flexibility in dealing with some initial problems with the program and working to make this a successful initiative that will benefit not only businesses that for once can get paid for using their energy more intelligently, but also the Province as a whole."
