The best performers are achieving levels of mechanical availability never seen before, with costs that are well below previous world-class performance thresholds.

Al Poling of Solomon Associates, the leading performance improvement company for the global energy industry, will present “The Reliability Imperative: Lessons Learned from Reliability and Maintenance Benchmarking” at the MARCON 2012 conference being held February 27 through March 1 in Knoxville, Tenn.

As Solomon Associates’ project manager for the International Study of Plant Reliability and Maintenance Effectiveness, or RAM Study, Poling will discuss how global competition has changed the manufacturing landscape forever.

“Reliability and maintenance are being leveraged worldwide as competitive advantages,” said Poling. “The best performers are achieving levels of mechanical availability never seen before, with costs that are well below previous world-class performance thresholds.”

Organizations around the world depend on reliability and maintenance benchmarking to assess their performance relative to their peers in the same or similar industry. The RAM Study uses Solomon Associates’ Comparative Performance Analysis™ (CPA™) to identify millions of dollars in potential margin gains through improved equipment reliability as well as millions of dollars in reduced maintenance costs.

Data confirms the increasing use of benchmarking as a performance tool to drive continuous improvement, and manufacturers are recognizing effective reliability and maintenance practices as differentiators.

“Many view reliability as the most significant advancement in manufacturing since the quality initiatives of 20 years ago,” said Poling. “Consequently, reliability is becoming an integral part of the corporate strategic plan for more progressive and enlightened companies.”

Poling will discuss the latest reliability and maintenance benchmarking data at the MARCON event, which is open to all practitioners, specialists, educators, and students interested in learning and exchanging information on new technologies and methods in reliability, maintenance engineering, and management.

The conference is sponsored by the University of Tennessee’s Reliability and Maintainability Center, and it will be held at the Knoxville Marriott.
