New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s Contest Asked New Yorkers How to Save Energy with Better Light Bulbs

The reduction of energy costs at home from installing CFL's is something we at Allerdice Electric are proud to be sponsoring.

In support of a statewide program to help New Yorkers reduce their energy use and costs, Allerdice Electric Supply will provide gift packs of ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to local winner(s) of a contest that showed how to save money by switching to ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). Media are invited to join Allerdice Electric when they help winners make the transformations over the next two-weeks. Media interested in taking part should contact Kellye Shaw at 518.271.7311 for specific dates and times.

The gift packs, which are valued at an average of $150, are being provided as awards to video and essay winners of the Shining Example contest, which was sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to help save more than one million megawatt hours of electricity by installing 16.9 million energy-saving light bulbs. Video contest winners will receive a free CFL makeover for 10 other people. Allerdice Electric Supply will provide the CFLs to Shannon Hansen, as well as CFL gift packs to 10 other people identified by Hansen.

"The reduction of energy costs at home from installing CFL's is something we at Allerdice Electric are proud to be sponsoring." said Dave Moen, Allerdice Electric Supply Manager. Moen stressed the importance of consumers adding more about more energy saving product offerings such as LED bulbs (light emitting diodes), timers, dimmers, occupancy sensor switches, motion detectors and photocells, plug-in electricity monitors, and programmable thermostats.

“It is amazing to realize how dramatically we could cut our energy if every New Yorker switched to CFLs,” said Francis J. Murray, President and CEO of NYSERDA. "Our retail partners and the winners of this contest demonstrate how the simple act of switching to CFLs could save New Yorkers millions of dollars in energy costs while improving our environment and helping to meet the ambitious energy reduction goals set by Governor David Paterson.”

Earlier this year, hundreds of residents across New York participated in the Shining Example contest by submitting videos and essays describing how they cut their energy use by switching to ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs that use 75 percent less energy, last about 10 times longer than standard light bulbs and cut energy costs by around $30 over the lifetime of the bulb.

Portions of the winning videos will appear in the Shining Example television ad debuting this fall and all winners will receive a free Comprehensive Home Assessment from Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, a comprehensive program that follows a whole-house approach that results in identifying where and how a home is losing energy. These whole-house improvements can improve the comfort, health and safety of existing homes of any size or style, while reducing energy use and costs by up to 40 percent.
