We are now positioned in an area where we can offer employers an expert to determine what problem areas they are experiencing or may be potentially exposed to in the work setting

AthletiCo Physical and Occupational Therapy , an Illinois and Milwaukee-based provider of rehabilitation services, recently hired Keri Harris, MS, OTR/L, to manage its Ergonomics and Job Analysis Program. Harris’s role as the Ergonomics and Job Analysis Program Manager enhances AthletiCo’s already well-established Work Rehabilitation Program by providing pre-injury solutions to employers to help reduce their exposure risk and the costs associated with workers’ compensation claims.
According to Michael Trombetta, AthletiCo’s Director of Work Rehabilitation Business Development, the hiring of Harris has enabled AthletiCo to provide expertise from a licensed occupational therapist in Ergonomics, Job Analysis, and Post-Offer Pre-Employment Tests.
“We are now positioned in an area where we can offer employers an expert to determine what problem areas they are experiencing or may be potentially exposed to in the work setting,” says Trombetta. “The value of reduction of workers’ compensation claims is threefold: reduction of medical costs, reduction of worker replacement costs, and reduction of indemnification costs.”
Through the Ergonomics and Job Analysis Program, AthletiCo’s therapists can assist companies with on-site evaluation for computer and workstation settings, individual or multiple evaluations, one-on-one education of workstation set-up, injury prevention education, and back safety and proper lifting education. In addition, by recommending or requesting an ergonomic evaluation or job analysis, physicians, nurse case managers, and employers can work together to resolve worker cases faster.
“By determining the physical demands of the job through a job analysis, employers can make better return-to-work determinations,” says Harris. “Implementation of ergonomic interventions can reduce those physical demands and get the worker back to work faster as well as help prevent the injury from reoccurring.”
AthletiCo’s post-offer pre-employment testing is another injury prevention tool that screens applicants’ abilities to carry out physically demanding work. Post-offer testing can help control work-related injuries by identifying those who are capable of carrying out the essential functions.
For Harris, working with injury prevention programs is very rewarding because employees feel like someone is listening to their concerns and ideas and are usually extremely appreciative. In addition, she also has the ability to help employers be proactive rather than reactive in prevention of injuries.
