Esser Vineyards, the award-winning California winery owned and run by two generations of the dog-loving Esser family, sponsored the first ever national "Esser Take Your Dog to Dinner Night" benefiting animal shelters and charities nationwide.

Esser Vineyards selected restaurants in New York, Chicago, Florida, and Kentucky to host dinner events on the evening of Pet Sitters International's National Take Your Dog to Work Day on June 26, 2009. Dog owners and their pets flocked to participating restaurants where they enjoyed gourmet meals paired with Esser Vineyards' premium quality wines made by renowned winemaker Paul Moser. Not to be outdone, the four-legged guests also enjoyed a gourmet meal donated by co - sponsor Weruva Pet Foods.

The idea began at the impetus of Esser Vineyards charismatic proprietor Manfred Esser, who is as passionate about his beloved Dachshund, Ludwig as he is about producing high-quality, elegant, affordable, California wines. He has in fact made Ludwig "Chairman of the Board" of Esser Vineyards. "I realized that by creating Esser Take Your Dog to Dinner Night, we could create a wonderful opportunity for dog lovers (most of whom are also wine lovers) to bring their dogs to dinner and sample great food and wine together while benefiting local animal shelters and charities," said Esser. "Not only will this help save the lives of dogs less fortunate than Ludwig, it will also allow more people to discover and enjoy our award-winning Esser wines."

Partial proceeds from the events will be donated to the New York ASPCA, the Kentucky Humane Society, the Florida Tri County Humane Society, and the Illinois PAWS organization. Shelters and Animal charities nationwide have seen a steady decline in donations due to the economy. Through Esser Take Your Dog to Dinner Night, Esser Vineyards and Weruva Pet Foods hope to help bridge this gap while also bringing much needed commerce to local restaurants.

"The Esser Take Your Dog to Dinner event was a great experience for us," said Brad Jennings, Manager of participating restaurant, Lilly's, in Kentucky. "We raised money for the Humane Society, our patio was filled with diners and their dogs, the Esser wines paired beautifully with our cuisine and were thoroughly enjoyed by patrons, and the Weruva dog food was much appreciated by our four-legged friends."

First celebrated in 1999, Take Your Dog to Work Day was created to recognize the companionship between an owner and his or her furry friend, and to encourage their adoption from humane societies, animal shelters, and breed rescue clubs. This annual event encourages employers to experience the value of pets in their workplace during one special day, while also promoting pet adoption.

Weruva Pet Foods, known as one of the healthiest pet foods available, has been active in grass roots programs since its inception. "We were thrilled with the amount of attention that this program generated for animals that are not as well cared for as our own pets. We hope that this event continues to grow, and we greatly look forward to participating next year," said David Foreman, President of Weruva Pet Foods.
