Obliging letting agents to belong to a mandatory redress scheme will give landlords and tenants an avenue for dealing with complaints if and when they arise and members will have to abide by its codes.

The UK’s largest independent estate agent, and a founder member of SAFEagent, a body that supports the use of Client Money Protection (CMP) schemes, believes the introduction of a Property Ombudsmen by the Government is vital for giving consumers a right of redress when things go wrong.

Explains Paul Smith, Chief Executive Officer of haart: “Obliging letting agents to belong to a mandatory redress scheme will give landlords and tenants an avenue for dealing with complaints if and when they arise and members will have to abide by its codes. Anything that provides more assurance is good news especially as the lettings industry is becoming an increasingly important sector of the property market.”

Added Paul Smith: “haart has been a voluntary member of the current Property Ombudsmen scheme from the outset because we believe that it’s important for customers to have an independent mechanism that is free for them to use and binding on us at a letting agent. Rather worryingly, as an industry, less than 50% of letting agents are members of such schemes and that is simply not acceptable in this day and age.”
