Salem Plumbing Supply is a third generation family-owned plumbing and heating wholesaler and retail supply company that has served the New England community since 1945. In August 2009, Salem Plumbing Supply was introduced to the Eternal hybrid water heater by J & K Sales Associates, the local New England and Upstate New York sales representatives in Manchester, New Hampshire. The Eternal provides endless hot water like a tankless, but has a small storage tank inside so hot water is ready when needed. Since the company added the Eternal to its selection, the response has been positive.
According to Gary Paul, Sales Manager at Salem Plumbing Supply, “With the hard times, the Eternal has brought new life to our business. It is unique and allows our contractors to have a discussion with the customer.”
Recently, Salem Plumbing Supply recommended the Eternal hybrid water heater for a project at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts. Bayview Hall, a residence hall on campus, needed a new water heating system. The building houses approximately 200 students. For this project, they removed a 1.5 million BTU condensing boiler which was heating 360 gallons of domestic water in three indirect 120 gallon storage tanks and replaced it with four Eternal GU195S units and one 120 gallon buffer tank.
Marc Pelletier, a licensed heating and cooling specialist, pipe fitter, and mechanical services manager at Endicott College, said he used the Eternal hybrid water heaters for the job because they are easy to install, easy to service, have a small footprint, and they reduce standby loss. In the past, the facilities manager received complaints about hot water when the college hosted 40 – 60 kids for athletic training camps during the summer. After 90 minutes of showers, the current systems would run out of hot water and the boilers eventually failed. When Marc learned about the Eternal, he thought it was a good fit for their needs because it is an on-demand solution that has the ability to connect to a tank for high demand situations. The Eternal also met the college’s requirements for heating solutions because it has a sealed burner and it allows for extended venting which is important in old buildings.
The Eternal’s high efficiency rating has helped the college save money too. Ten Eternals have been installed in different buildings on campus and each Eternal installation has reduced the college’s energy consumption by 10 – 20%. To help defray the cost of installation, Endicott also receives a rebate from the local utility company when the college replaces older inefficient equipment. In the summer when the campus population decreases, the mechanical services manager expects the college will save more money with the reduction in standby loss. The Eternal’s high efficiency rating also helps the Sustainability Committee on campus meet its environmental objectives for the college.
Salem Plumbing Supply is pleased with the Eternal product line as well. By offering its customers highly-versatile and unique products like the Eternal hybrid water heater, the company is able to fulfill numerous unmet needs in the marketplace. “The Eternal seems to fit many projects and we have several success stories,” Gary said. “We like the quality, performance, and size of the units and we believe our company has more opportunities because of our relationship with Grand Hall, the manufacturer of the Eternal hybrid water heater.”
Salem Plumbing Supply has sold more than 200 Eternal hybrid water heaters in the last 17 months and offers training at both of its locations in Massachusetts. The company has 40 employees and carries approximately 60,000 different SKUs. Providing the best service before, during, and after the sale, is a critical part of the business. When the company offers new products, the management team provides additional support to ensure their customers have a good experience.
