Author and design teacher Eugenio Vega presents a fresh look at the design of manufactured products and its relation to communication, transport and urban planning in, “Tiempos modernos, Tiempos díficiles: El diseño en la consolidación de la sociedad de consumo” (published by AuthorHouse).

“I want to enable students to acquire knowledge and see the role of design in society from a new perspective,” Vega shares with his readers. “This new perspective will allow better understanding of the importance of design in everyday life.”

“Tiempos modernos, Tiempos díficiles,” which directly translates to “Modern Times, Hard Times,” breaks apart the traditional view that design is only a form of artistic expression. Instead, Vega places importance on the role of the economy as a more direct influence of design. “The design is an art form that seeks to speculate on the complexity of the shape,” he explains. “It is a direct way to convey ideas about consumption and wealth to all those involved in the trade.”

The design of the product influences how the consumer feels about the product and can change buying patterns. Advertising further adds to the influence by helping the consumer equate positive emotions with a product so they will continue to buy it again and again. Vega’s book explains the relationship between design, social and economic relationships and is an excellent source of information for students and teachers.
