Starting E-Waste Recyclers of Colorado in a 10 x 10 storage unit with just faith and a web site was Ken Burn’s way to feed his family, get them into a home and out of an unfortunate situation Ken had a goal of achieving R2 (Responsible Recycler) Certification from the beginning and has accomplished his goal in under two years. E-Waste Recyclers of Colorado is now one of only a handful of companies in the E-Waste Industry to achieve all three of the following top recycling certifications; R2 (Responsible Recycler), RIOS (Recycling Industry Operating Standards™) and ISO 14001-2004 (Environmental management system). As a Service-Disabled and Veteran-owned Small Business serving Rural Colorado, accomplishing such high levels of Certification will help E-Waste Recyclers of Colorado add more “Green Collar” Jobs. Ken and his staff are proud to have impacted the Grand Valley’s economy by adding 18 Jobs in the last 18 Months.

With 3 to 4 million tons of electronics equipment recycled each year, market demand has driven the need for responsible electronic recycling practices at the highest level. The certification R2/RIOS™ grew from that demand. R2/RIOS™ is a critical protection against data theft because it adheres to HIPPA regulations and requires proper data destruction methods which E-Waste Recyclers has adopted. These practices provide confidence that laptops and cell phones won’t expose confidential information or end up in a landfill harming the environment. R2/RIOS™ assures that reuse and recycling are the foremost goals in the lifecycle of electronics. The RIOS™ management system standard for quality, environment, health and safety (QEH&S) includes the operational advancements found in ISO 9001 (Q), ISO 14001 (E) and OHSAS 18001 (H&S) – all wrapped into one. ISO 14001:2004 enables an organization to develop and implement policies and objectives that take into account legal and other requirements to protect the environment. A certified facility, such as E-Waste Recyclers of Colorado, undergoes continual audits by accredited third parties who verify conformance to responsible recycling standards. In addition to establishing quality, environmental, health and safety standards, R2/RIOS™ mandates proper management and execution of exports, providing confidence to companies that materials being transported overseas are tested for function and are safe and legal. In the U.S., certification has been increasingly included in state regulatory language, including Colorado SENATE BILL 12-133, which goes into effect July 1st 2013, making it illegal for residents of colorado to throw away or dump e-waste in their waste streams and for State entities to use Certified E-waste recyclers.

In light of new e-waste regulatory measures, company compliance is a responsibility E-Waste Recyclers of Colorado takes seriously and prides themselves on protecting data and the environment. For more information on these certifications or regulations, call (970) 986-4002.
