The back-to-school season is in full swing and beyond getting their children enrolled in classes, parents are looking for after-school activities for their kids. While many children take up sports and music lessons, some are exploring new hobbies like model railroading because of the educational value that it offers.

“When children get introduced to a new hobby, they gain a greater interest in the subject at hand and it may even help guide their decisions about a future career. Model railroading teaches kids about a variety of educational areas in a fun way,” said Blaine Hadfield, vice president of product for ExactRail, a company specializing in authentically detailed model railroad products. “Building a model railroad incorporates a lot of different subjects including engineering, history, geography, art and carpentry skills.”

Model train museums offer a wealth of resources and information. For those who homeschool their children, EnterTRAINment Junction in West Chester, Ohio has created a program specifically for them. The Train Journey is running Sept. 24-28 that takes a look at three distinct eras in U.S. history through the museums 25,000 square foot model railroad display.

“Model railroading is something kids of every age can get involved in. Kids are spending a lot of
time on the computer these days. This is something that gives them the chance to step away from the computer and use their hands and their mind to create something,” said Don Oeters, president of EnterTRAINment Junction.

Mainstream schools are also incorporating model railroading into various curriculums. The Clinton School District in Massachusetts works in conjunction with the MetroWest Model Railroad Society to host a variety of programs for elementary school students.

There are many model train groups for children. Youth in Model Railroading is a national organization for kids ages 8 to 18 who have an interest in model trains and how to build things.

There are also model railroad clubs throughout the United States that host youth nights and open houses to attract new people to the hobby. Many times they are open to letting young people join the club along with a parent. Club members are usually glad to share information about the skills and techniques used to create parts of the model railroad.

Outside of participating in an organized group, model railroading can be a great activity to do together at home as a family. A passion for model railroading often happens in youth and is passed from generation to generation.

“Children can contribute to various sections of the model based on their skill level,” Hadfield explained. “This can start with simple painting activities and build up to more technical electrical skills.”
