Excelsior College, a nonprofit, accredited distance learning college, has simplified the undergraduate admissions process for active duty members of military in order to move students more quickly into their academic coursework.

In addition, Excelsior has reduced graduate-level tuition for Army personnel to $250 per credit, in line with Military Tuition Assistance limits. Reduced tuition is available to Army personnel enrolling for the March 2011 term. For personnel in other military branches, reduced tuition applies to the May 2011 term.

The new streamlined process for the undergraduate application reflects the thoroughness and quality of screening procedures already in use by military education counselors who gather pertinent information from prospective students.

“The military’s pre-college screening process provides all the necessary information to satisfy Excelsior’s application requirements, so military students can save time and start coursework earlier,” said Susan Dewan, executive director of Excelsior’s Center for Military Education. “This change has already been well-received by Army personnel as a time-saving step, and we have already seen an increase in new military enrollments since we simplified this process in mid-January.”

For instance, active duty Army personnel who have completed the GoArmyEd Common Application have essentially satisfied Excelsior’s application information requirements. The data from this Common Application is electronically submitted by the Army to Excelsior, which creates an official record for the student. From that point, Excelsior communicates directly with the student, facilitating the enrollment and course registration process.

The simplified procedure applies to students seeking to enroll in the Excelsior schools of Business & Technology, Liberal Arts and Health Sciences. Applicants seeking admission to the School of Nursing will still be required to complete an application.

For graduate degree students, tuition reductions will ease the financial outlay for active-duty military members who are seeking master’s level education. Tuition will be reduced from $455 to $250 per credit.

Excelsior College, with more than 10,000 military members and veterans among its student population of nearly 30,000, has a long history of educating military students and veterans, and has been repeatedly recognized as a military-friendly college by GI Jobs and Military Advanced Education magazine. In addition:

  •     Excelsior’s course, “Success Strategies for Military and Veterans” has earned the 2010-2011 Innovation Award from the Center for Transforming Student Services (CENTSS). The course provides college orientation to military members and veterans and teaches transition strategies for those entering the civilian workforce after a military career.
  •     Excelsior’s president, John F. Ebersole, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran who served in Vietnam, received the Secretary of the Army Public Service Award in 2010, for his leadership in contributing to the Army’s educational mission.
  •     Many of Excelsior’s military academic advisors are veterans who are uniquely attuned to the unique needs of military students, veterans, and their family members.
  •     Excelsior has a Military Spouse Scholarship Program, to benefit the military husbands and wives in their educational and career goals.
  •     The Center for Professional Development provides non-credit vocational training and professional development programs, many of which qualify for military education benefits.
