Improvements kick in as your plane leaves the gate

Huge improvements in aviation technology - going on right now - have been nearly invisible to passengers. A recently released video changes that.

NextGen Gate to Gate clearly shows how the Next Generation Air Transportation System reduces flight delays, improves safety and cuts fuel use.

"Improvements kick in as your plane leaves the gate," according to the fast-paced six minute video, which was reviewed by Wired.

Gate to Gate takes viewers behind the scenes of a cross-country flight today, and then zooms into the not-too-distant future to show a similar flight using NextGen technologies, some of which are already in use.

NextGen is the transformation of U.S. aviation as it moves from ground-based radar to satellite navigation. More direct and precise flight paths enhance fuel efficiency, resulting in financial savings and an improved carbon footprint. Greater precision opens up more airspace, increasing capacity and decreasing delays. More timely, accurate information and better communications technology heighten safety.
