The United States Air Force Academy will install FieldTurf at Falcon Field, it was jointly announced today by Air Force Director of Athletics Dr. Hans Mueh and FieldTurf CEO Joe Fields. The new turf is currently being manufactured with the installation scheduled to begin later this month.
Falcon Field is one of the top baseball facilities in the west, and it has earned national recognition by twice being the home of the United States Olympic Festival. The new FieldTurf will cover both the infield and outfield, and will replace Falcon Field's current Sport Turf, which had been installed in 2004 but on the infield only.
"We are very excited about having FieldTurf as our source of playing surface for the years to come," said Falcons Head Baseball Coach Mike Hutcheon. "It will be a major step in improving our program and our facility. Adding this facelift to our stadium will ensure our chances to play and practice in any type of weather condition, and that is a huge deal in Colorado. I also feel it will be a major selling point in all of our recruiting efforts in getting the best student/athletes in the country. Another big plus will be the low maintenance of getting our field ready for practice and games compared to all the raking, mowing and tamping that used to go on."
