With the hottest days of summer upon us, parents and caregivers can find themselves at a loss for how to entertain and nurture children while keeping cool. High temperatures mean it’s too hot to go outside and indoor play leads to bored and cranky kids. Finding engaging and educational activities, both at home and on the road can be challenging for even the most experienced parent.
To help your family beat the heat and encourage learning this summer, Parents’ Choice Foundation offers the following family tips and tools:
· Create a weekly schedule of activities that includes a visit to one new destination while continuing routine trips to the library, swimming pool and playground. Why not plan a visit to a museum for a treat the whole family can enjoy? Here are six suggestions for a happy excursion.
· Encourage children to help plan activities from the beginning stages to create excitement and interest. What child wouldn’t want to plan a trip to the local ice cream factory? Read more about one family’s visit to the Ben and Jerry’s Factory in Waterbury Vermont.
· Turn a repeat visit to a favorite museum into an adventure by creating games and scavenger hunts for added fun and interest. Postcard Treasure Hunt, I Spy an Eye and Art Collector are just a few creative games to play with children while visiting an art museum.
· Incorporate activities into the schedule that can be done at home on rainy or just plain lazy days such as an afternoon of baking. Cooking together is not only a great way to spend time with your children, but can serve as an ideal opportunity to teach them valuable skills and lessons about health, nutrition, reading and math.
About Parents' Choice Foundation:
Parents' Choice Foundation is the nation's oldest and most respected nonprofit guide to quality children's media and toys. An independent testing and information organization since 1978, Parents' Choice is dedicated to providing trusted family tips and tools for books, toys, music, video games, digital media and more.
We review, evaluate and recommend products that help kids grow – imaginatively, physically, morally and mentally – fairly priced products that are fun, safe and socially sound. The Parents' Choice website, a public service resource, serves as a clearinghouse for children's media and toys. For more than 30 years, parents, grandparents, educators, librarians and healthcare professionals have relied on Parents' Choice for suggestions to help foster an environment for kids to read more, play more and learn more.
Parents' Choice Award Seals:
The Parents' Choice Awards program honors the best material for children: books, toys, music and storytelling, magazines, software, video games, television and websites. Parents' Choice Foundation's panels of educators, scientists, performing artists, librarians, parents and, yes, kids themselves, identify the very best products for children of varied skill and interest levels from infants to young adults.
The Parents' Choice Award seals are a distinguishing mark of quality and achievement.
