El Paso, TX (PRWEB) August 27, 2013
Responding to news reports about two deadly pedestrian accidents less than 90 minutes apart, El Paso car accident attorney Michael J. Gopin said today that both drivers and pedestrians need to exercise good judgment on El Paso roadways and crosswalks.
The El Paso Times (“El Paso police continue investigating two pedestrian deaths,” August 14) reports that two pedestrians were killed in separate accidents only miles away from each other.
“We’ve seen recently that car accidents involving pedestrians have tragic consequences. These fatal accidents raise immediate concern over pedestrian safety throughout El Paso, from proper crosswalk usage to the habits of drivers behind the wheel,” said Gopin, whose law firm represents victims of negligence and families who lost loved ones in accidents. “If a driver is distracted, texting while driving, or under the influence of alcohol, there could be grave consequences.”
According to the El Paso Times, the first accident occurred as an elderly woman was crossing a street in her South Side neighborhood. While the cause of the accident is under investigation to determine who had the right of way, the story reports that neighbors have repeatedly expressed concern that the neighborhood’s traffic signal changes too quickly, giving pedestrians little time to safely cross the street.
The El Paso Times story said that the second accident occurred less than 90 minutes later when a man was involved in a hit-and-run accident in his West Side neighborhood. The story said the victim, who was not using a crosswalk, was hit by two additional vehicles after the driver of the first car that struck him fled the scene.
“Both pedestrians and drivers have an obligation to one another to exercise good judgment and obey the rules of the road. Sadly, accidents involving pedestrians are ultimately avoidable. While the causes of both accidents are under investigation, if either driver is found at fault, the legal repercussions could be serious,” said Gopin, an El Paso car accident lawyer. “The families of the accident victims might have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver if they’re found to have been negligent. Personal injury lawyers can help families obtain compensation and closure and help send a message that negligent behavior will not be tolerated.”
