Environmentally sustainable sandbag alternative
Meridian, Idaho (PRWEB) February 28, 2013
The beauty of the design is the simplicity. The AIRE Diversion Tube™ stores flat but when filled with water from a garden hose, fire hydrant or water tanker, it becomes operational within minutes and is easily moved into place.
“The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports that each year approximately 90 percent of all disaster-related property damage results from flooding. Over the past decade, the average flood claim in the United States has been more than $46,000 with yearly totals averaging $3.5 billion per year” This does not begin to address the high cost of environmental damage to native habitat caused by erosion and silt contamination from construction site run-off.
Getting the design right
During the initial design process, AIRE engineers tested numerous materials then chose to use an industrial grade, coated, 22 ounce PVC material that is well suited to commercial, industrial and governmental agency applications. An AIRE senior engineer explained, “Our criteria was to find a material that would contain water for long periods even in hot and cold temperatures, be abrasion resistant so as to be able to hold up to typical construction site use and yet, still remain flexible enough when filled that the AIRE Diversion Tube™ can be bent or formed around objects to create the desired water channel”.
Sandbags are a dilemma, though incredibly useful to stave off floods, the aftermath of clean up can be a logistical and hazmat nightmare. Sandbags are a one-use item that must be disposed of after an event. The usual disposal area is the local landfill. However, if the bags are contaminated, it takes a special hazardous waste cleanup. Using flood diversion tubes eliminates the need to jam up landfills with bag waste. The flood tubes can be disinfected if needed, rolled up and used repeatedly.
The tubes are available in sizes from 6” to 12” in diameter and in standard lengths from 6 feet to 150 feet long. In addition, the flood diversion tube can be fitted together for longer lengths. AIRE is available to work on custom designs and projects.
