There is a myth that when you get older, especially when you have a chronic illnesses, you shouldn't exercise, that you should save your energy for essential daily tasks

Exercise is the key to staying strong, energetic and healthy—and it doesn’t end when a person reaches a certain age. SportZal, the highly regarded Belmont / Redwood City fitness center, knows that corrective fitness helps control symptoms of illness and joint pain in seniors, and can even help reverse some of the effects of aging. Seniors will not only feel better, they can often remain living independent longer.

Exercise also affects seniors’ minds and moods, according to the AARP. SportZal has announced specialized classes for Baby Boomers and prior generations. These courses will help participants head off or at least minimize the occurrence of common injuries, aches and pains, anxiety and stress.

“There is a myth that when you get older, especially when you have a chronic illnesses, you shouldn't exercise, that you should save your energy for essential daily tasks,” said Galina Fedorova of SportZal. “But the opposite is true: you can't afford not to keep moving. Seniors' concerns about injuries from falls and strains are valid, but exercise will toughen up the body—and it’s all done under the watchful eyes of a corrective fitness specialist.”

The corrective fitness specialists at SportZal not only help seniors develop customized personal training programs post physical therapy in their studio in Belmont, but offer group classes at seniors assisted living places around SF Bay Area as well. Zumba Gold, a class geared towards those 55 years of age and older, is very popular now. This dance-fitness class still has all the fun elements of Zumba, including the zesty Latin music, exhilarating and easy-to-follow moves, and invigorating, party-like atmosphere. The exercises are simply modified so that the moves and pacing suit the needs of a more mature participant.

Other classes available to seniors at SportZal include:

Healing Yoga – Yoga helps seniors with a wide range of physical ailments, such as back pain and arthritis. It also benefits those recovering from illnesses and surgeries.

Balance and Stability Class – This course is designed to reduce the risk and fear of falling and boosts confidence by improving balance, posture and quality of walking.

Buddy Training – This exercise class pairs a senior parent with an adult child. It not only helps motivate both to participate, it helps the family members build stronger bonds, feel good about themselves, and reduce their stress.
