Everybody knows Fleetwood Mac. Mom and Dad danced to them in high school, and the kids know them from Internet radio and a million oldie shows. This band provided part of the soundtrack of their times, beginning at that epic moment in 1975 when the album Fleetwood Mac came out. The appearance of this recording was like an explosion in the music scene, changing everything that came after it.
By then, early hits like “Oh Well,” “Sentimental Lady” and “Hypnotized” had already earned the band a small but loyal cult following in the States, but most American kids were only vaguely aware of them. In 1974, guitarist Bob Welch left acrimoniously to be replaced by Lindsey Buckingham, a desperate move that turned out to be fortuitous. Buckingham said he wouldn’t join the band without his girlfriend, Stephanie Nicks. In the same shake-up, session musician Christine McVie became an official member of the band, providing a second female voice for the harmonies.
Suddenly a raw blues-rock band became a sleek, polished hit machine. The album Fleetwood Mac and its follow-up, Rumours, produced some of the most iconic tunes of that era, ranging from the haunting “Rhiannon” to the exuberant “Go Your Own Way.” Fans have been humming those wonderful tunes ever since, and the band’s sputtering, lawsuit-ridden demise only served to spark hope of an eventual reunion and triumphant concert tour.
Those hopes were not in vain. The 34-city Fleetwood Mac Tour 2013 starts April 4 in Columbus, Ohio and promises to be a feast of tunes old and new performed by classic band members Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Tickets will disappear fast, so fans are advised to move quickly. Dust off your light sticks and your fringe jacket; you’re going to need them.
