London, UK (PRWeb UK) January 31, 2010

Research carried out by Post Office Travel Services has revealed that UK tourists travelling to Turkey could face a 44 per cent price increase in costs for when spending their travel money this year. The news is set to impact a large number of holidaymakers, as Turkey was one of 2009's most popular destinations for UK travellers with the Post Office reporting that foreign currency sales for Turkish lira were up 44 per cent year on year 2.

While foreign currency exchange rates reveal Turkish lira has weakened by more than seven per cent against sterling in the past year , the new Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer reveals UK tourists' travel money will be stretched in Turkey in 2010 by significant rises in costs of meals, drinks and other holiday items.

Travellers to Turkey will see their travel money being stretched to average costs of £2.24 for a cup of coffee, £2.46 for a pack of Marlboro Lights cigarettes and £58.14 for a three-course meal and bottle of house wine for two adults in a local restaurant. This compares with the same items last year costing travellers £1.79, £2.24 and £40.26 respectively highlighting just how much further UK holidaymakers travel money previously went.

Sarah Munro, Post Office Head of Travel Money, said: "Judging by the price rises recorded in our latest cost comparison survey on foreign currency, Turkey is unlikely to be the cheap destination that it was just a couple of years ago when the Post Office barometer identified the country as a best buy value for travel money. For 2010, our shopping basket of eight tourist staples indicates that Turkey is now 68 per cent more expensive than Spain."
