G.A. Coffing & Sons has been awarded a federal contract to repair failed portions of the foundation at the Texas White House on the LBJ Ranch, now the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. The Texas White House was officially opened to the public on August 27, 2008 when the restored President's Office was made available for tours and now the majority of the living areas are included. The bedrooms of the home are still undergoing repairs and will be opened in the near future. Based in Austin, Texas G. A. Coffing & Sons is the premier provider of residential and commercial foundation repair services in Central and Southeast Texas.
According to Gary A. Coffing, Sr., "LBJ bought the property in 1951 from his Aunt and Uncle and it required a great deal of shoring up in terms of foundation repair due to the drought of the early 1950s. The current drought in Central Texas, which is the most severe since then, has caused sections of the Texas White House to experience damage." A noted consulting and problem resolution expert and sought-after speaker for real estate offices, investor groups and a frequent guest on radio home improvement shows, Coffing explains that despite regular watering for landscape and grounds maintenance, the foundation has been starved for needed moisture.
"Texas clay soil will shrink during droughts and dry seasons, and then it expands during the rainy season. However, it won't expand back to 100 percent, nor will the original elevation of the structure be reached. This results in a lack of support of the foundation from the soil underneath and eventual structural failure. When this occurs, the installation of deep piers below the beams of the structure will create a bridge piling-style support for the failed foundation. Working on a fragile historical site, we had to be innovative to achieve a permanent repair."
"We found the perfect solution with the [Perfect Pier by Advanced Segment Systems of Kansas City, MO. These steel encased concrete pilings were installed with no new stress damage to the 50+ year old rock veneer and reached exceptional depths given the light weight we had to work with," Coffing says.
G.A. Coffing & Sons was recently named the exclusive Texas distributor for this new eco-product by Advanced Segment Systems, a top innovator in the foundation piling industry. "This interlocking piling system is the missing link to a full service line of foundation repair products and should be used by every reputable contractor in the state," Coffing notes.
About Gary A. Coffing, Sr.
Gary Coffing was born into the swimming pool construction business and by the age of 15, he could build an in-ground gunite/concrete pool with his eyes closed. Thirty years ago, Coffing started leveling pier and beam houses in the Montrose and Heights areas of Houston "because it was difficult to build a level pool that adjoined an un-level house." It didn't take him long to figure out that house leveling was a fact of life in Texas and less complicated than pool construction.
Seeking a better way to level concrete beams, Coffing decided to continue his education. For the next decade, he studied research from the engineering departments of the University of Houston, University of Texas and Texas A&M, as well as the Agricultural Extension Office and National Geological Survey Department of the U.S. He also traveled throughout the country investigating every method of foundation repair imaginable. Wishing to share his experience and knowledge, Coffing began speaking to groups around the state of Texas with his program "Foundation Repair 101" and for two decades has continued to offer this program free of charge to those interested in learning the proper care and maintenance of properties on the unique soils of Texas.
