The Miami Beach Condo Journal released its New Miami Project of the Week, following the opening of booking of a new 60-room upscale hostel in Miami Beach, moving into the former Indian Creek Hotel.

The Miami Beach Condo Journal announced its New Miami Project of the Week after booking opened for Freehand Miami Beach, a new, state-of-the-art hostel opening soon. The hostel is being built in 60 rooms of the old Indian Creek Hotel, which are currently being renovated. Designed by New York firm Roman and Williams, Freehand Miami Beach is being touted as a beautiful, upscale hostel which plays on its Miami Beach condo surroundings. Lead designer Robin Standefer says of the project: “Think seaside boathouse, lifeguard school, a homemade summer camp near the ocean.”

The new hostel is being developed by Andrew Zobler, the C.E.O. of Sydell Group. Zobler traveled to hostels around the world (including the United States), and says that his experiences showed him something lacking in hotels, but present in hostels - “a culture where the guests were open to and often seeking out meaningful interactions with each other and where new friendships were being formed.” Freehand Miami Beach is designed to bring that spirit to Miami lodging; it will offer a vegetable garden, bicycles, art classes and much more, all working to bring guests together. What’s more, the hostel will feature a restaurant and bar managed by the owners of the Broken Shaker, a popular (but now closed) Miami bar. Most of the 60 available rooms will be outfitted with eight beds, but about a quarter will be private, designed to accommodate one or two guests. Wanting to make the actual lodging experience more like St. Regis Bal Harbour condos and less like traditional hostel living, Freehand will include towels, sheets, and pillows in all of its rooms; often hostels abroad and in the States don’t.

The hostel’s designers, Roman and Williams, have had success with lodging projects before; they designed the popular Ace Hotel New York. With this project, they are trying to capture the beach surroundings in a styled, camp-like atmosphere; the rooms will be colorfully painted, many decked out with bunk beds. The hostel hopes to be open in time for Art Basel Miami, an extremely popular art show taking place the second weekend of December. Booking is open now for any room, with rates starting at around $50 per bed per night.
