We were able to provide accurate numbers for each area and explanations for why some areas were higher or lower than others’ estimates. We got the job, not because we were the cheapest, but because I could answer questions clearly and completely.

Kris Noyes likes making money, the more the better, and he’s willing to do what it takes to earn it. Indeed, Noyes started working at age 11 with a paper route that he grew from 30 homes to 120 in just a couple of years. Since then he’s had a string of successful businesses, and at 35, he’s adding yet another: a Fresh Coat Painters franchise to serve southern New Jersey.
A fellow entrepreneur, Matthew McKay, introduced him to the franchise. McKay launched Fresh Coat Painters of Annapolis, Md., earlier this year.
“Matt and I are both owners of multiple Oreck stores, and we were chatting at a recent meeting when he told me about the company,” Noyes said. “I liked that the ideals of Fresh Coat matched those of Oreck. We put our clients first, and that’s what puts us in a different category than most vacuum cleaner companies. Fresh Coat is in a different category than most painting companies. Buying the franchise seemed like a great chance to add an income stream while providing a quality service.”
Bernie Brozek, president of Fresh Coat, said successful business owners like Noyes and McKay appreciate the company’s business model because it brings professionalism to an industry tarnished by too many negative images of painters who don’t do the job right.
Noyes recalled his own experience of scheduling five painters for bids on a project and having only three show up. “The basics were ignored. It’s seems so obvious that you should answer calls, show up on time, wearing a clean shirt. I don’t know how many stories I’ve heard of people saying the painter didn’t show up and didn’t call or showed up saying the job would take four days, but it was 12 instead. There’s a lot of frustration.”
Brozek said he’s heard those stories, too.
“Painting is a high-demand industry, and our owners know how important it is to focus on client service because that’s what leads to repeat business and referrals,” he said. “Our business model allows our owners to promote their businesses while the client service managers and painters – employees, never subcontractors – do the projects. That way clients get the best skills of all involved.”
Noyes especially likes the structure because he is not a painter. “I did it once and said I’d never do it again.” And, after seeing his painters at work, he understands why they feel the pressure when trying to do the job and generate new business.
“With the set-up, the breakdown, the job and the clean-up, I don’t see how they would have time to be out marketing services and signing new contracts. What they do requires skills and attention,” he said. “I want my painters to be very client-oriented and to go the extra mile to make sure they’re happy with the work. I see it as my job to provide continual, steady employment. I’m excited to be building the company and putting crews together.”
Brozek said Fresh Coat’s structure helps ensure franchise owners succeed, which is of paramount importance. “We complement their inherent abilities with quality marketing, training and resource materials along with a variety of client assistance programs.”
Among those are a 24/7 call center, proprietary EPIC estimating system, Paint Now-Pay Later same-as-cash financing, Automatic Touch-Up for businesses, and fund-raising opportunities for charities.
“The support is unbelievable,” Noyes said. “The marketing materials, the leads generated through the websites, the intranet for owners, it’s all awesome. The call center is priceless. I love to be in charge of everything, but there’s no way I could be available 24 hours a day. It’s great that we have someone who can take the calls and make appointments at any hour of the day or night.”
The EPIC system also has proved extremely helpful, he said, noting that one client in particular gave him the job because of the professionalism of his quote. “It was a significant project, and we were able to provide accurate numbers for each area and explanations for why some areas were higher or lower than others’ estimates. We got the job, not because we were the cheapest, but because I could answer questions clearly and completely.
“EPIC is impressive because we provide accurate numbers regarding costs and hours. We’re using a computer to measure and a printer to create a written proposal. It’s about being professional and providing real numbers. Not guesstimating.”
