With the launch of her Fresh Coat Painters franchise in Kirkwood, Mo., just west of St. Louis, Julie Glaser welcomes the chance to merge her creative talents with her project management skills to benefit the community where she and her family have made their home for more than 20 years.
Through those years, the Glasers have lived in numerous homes, and each time they’ve moved, Julie has taken on the challenge of being a general contractor. In addition, she has volunteered with committees at her daughters’ schools and created her own jewelry to sell at art festivals. With her daughters grown, she was ready for a new challenge when her husband, E.J., introduced her to Fresh Coat Painters because he saw it as an excellent opportunity to utilize her diverse abilities.

Her enthusiasm for the artistic is complemented by her practicality.
“I’ve gained a lot of insights first-hand,” she said, noting the importance of hiring quality people, using long-lasting materials, setting accurate schedules, and evaluating the finished work.

E.J. added that he has seen the damage subcontractors can do to a company’s reputation when they don’t do the job completely or correctly.
“We also know people who have had things stolen from their homes by workers,” he said. “I think it’s important that we can say to clients that our employees have passed background checks, and they’re bonded and insured.”
Julie considers it Fresh Coat’s best selling point. “We want good employees, and we can offer then steady work. That allows us to hire the pick of the crop. We can hire experts.”
Her first employee, for example, has more than 12 years of experience as a professional painter, she said, but he did not want to do the marketing side of the business. “He enjoys painting.”
Brozek said that many painters express similar appreciation for the company’s business model.
“Painting is a high-demand industry, but there are way too many fly-by-night operators,” he said. “Our painters like the stability of an organized, professional operation where they know they’ll have work year-round.
