My father was a small business owner, and as such, I know that it’s important to recognize the greater responsibility to those that work for you. Ultimately everyone benefits – the owners, the employees and the clients. It’s a team approach.

Fresh Coat Painters has added to its Michigan presence with the launch of Troy Tissue’s franchise to serve Grand Rapids, Grandville, Wyoming, Kentwood, Spring Lake and their surrounding communities in western Michigan.
The retired Navy veteran said he and his wife, Dorothy, saw the business as a complement to their years in public service. After the military, Troy spent 10 years as an associate director with a public university. Dorothy was a recruiter for the Army and remains on active duty with the Army National Guard. Their son, Jack, also a member of the National Guard, will be part of the team.
“We wanted to own a business that was service-related,” Tissue said. “We looked at various franchises, and we kept coming back to Fresh Coat. Both of us were very at ease and felt very supported. It offered the framework and the structure we were seeking.”
Bernie Brozek, president of Fresh Coat, said the Tissues’ military experience puts them in a good position to be successful franchise owners.
“They know first-hand the importance of focus, discipline and leadership in the success of any operation,” he said. “Our structure puts the focus on the clients, so that they receive the best of all those involved. Owners direct their energy into promoting and growing their businesses while client service managers and professional painters complete the specific projects. Clients get the best skills of all those involved.” Tissue said the structure was a selling point.
“We have experience in marketing and management,” he said. “It’s about having a good ear, listening, and helping clients get what they want. We want to hire the experienced artists who can bring the project to completion, so we screen for reliability, skills and professionalism. Our painters are licensed, insured and bonded, so we offer that extra element of security, too.”
Because Fresh Coat uses only its own employees, never subcontractors, clients can be assured of a commitment to quality and employees can know that they have some protections, he said.
“Everything is contained within our structure,” Tissue said. “My father was a small business owner, and as such, I know that it’s important to recognize the greater responsibility to those that work for you. Ultimately everyone benefits – the owners, the employees and the clients. It’s a team approach.
“The first painter we hired has 25 years’ experience in painting commercial and residential properties. He looks forward to working within the Fresh Coat model because he can work consistently in his own neighborhood without having to travel long distances for a job. And, because we’re family-owned, we’re in it for the long haul.”
Brozek said the corporation has found that many painters like the format.
“Painting is an industry with a negative reputation – late arrivals, messy clean-up, sloppy workmanship – so those who are professional appreciate the opportunity to work for a company that provides pay, benefits and steady work,” he said. “That professionalism is one of our biggest selling points.” Tissue agreed.
“In Michigan, we started the extremely sharp decline in housing and employment even before the rest of the country,” he said. “People are staying in their homes longer. They’re not moving, so they’re opting to freshen up their homes for themselves, not for the next buyer. We enjoy working with people to help them decide what they want to do and to give their home a new look. It’s that ‘Painting Done Right’ motto that is the operational difference, and clients understand the value of getting a lasting product they’re very happy to see long-term.”
Brozek said that commitment to client service is among the major factors for Fresh Coat’s growth across North America.
“The Tissues come to us with solid experience and positive attitudes,” Brozek said. “Our goal is to complement our owners’ inherent attributes to help ensure their success. To do so, we offer the best in quality marketing, training and resource materials.”
Among those materials are several client assistance programs including a 24/7 call center, proprietary EPIC estimating system, Paint Now-Pay Later same-as-cash financing, Automatic Touch-Up for businesses, and fund-raising opportunities for charities.
“We appreciated those services,” Tissue said. “For example, the EPIC system allows us to provide clients with timely and complete quotes with no risk of unpleasant surprises later. I know that once they give us a chance once, we’ll be their preferred painter for all future painting, and we’ll be the painter they refer to others.”
