Funeral.us.org is backing up all of their public records and customer data in the cloud to improve security, company officials said yesterday.
“Looking at some of the natural disasters that have struck over the past couple years has made us very worried about terrestrial-based servers and data storage,” a company representative said. “If we'd had our servers based in the East Coast, for example, they could have been compromised by Hurricane Sandy. We don't want that to happen to us or our customers.”
The move will make sure that there is no downtime in case the land-based servers are compromised due to blackouts, earthquakes, weather or other natural disasters, the company said.
“By having two different storage points, we make sure that in any disaster, at least one of them will always be up and running,” the representative said. “That means the data will always be available whenever our customers need it. And we'll never have to go to disaster recovery methods that can compromise data.”
