“It was exciting to see the clients use the different compositional techniques we taught them and to really understand and see light. Overall, it was an amazing trip and everyone learned and had lots of fun!” said Gachet.

Active Adventures have scheduled another Galapagos Photography Adventure next year following the success of their first special interest tour of this kind. Last month, six clients joined expert photographers, Ivan Kashinsky and Karla Gachet, in the Galapagos Islands for the rare opportunity to hone and improve their photography skills in a hands-on environment. Kashinsky and Gachet are leading industry professionals whose photography work is regularly published in National Geographic.

While most Galapagos adventure tours stay on liveaboard dive boats or cruise ships, Active Adventures crafted the land-based photography tour itinerary to provide a mixture of adventure and free time on shore while visiting all the inhabited islands of the Galapagos. Activities included cycling through lush highlands, snorkeling with sea lions and hiking to a seaside lookout, all scheduled to take advantage of the morning and evening light. Welcoming wildlife, which the Galapagos Islands are known for including blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, giant tortoises and sea lions, presented ample opportunities to practice close-up and action photography. The quaint towns and dramatic scenery of the Galapagos provided inspiration for portraiture and capturing landscape.

The tour was geared towards passionate, amateur photographers wanting to learn more and enthusiasts who may have felt their skills had hit a plateau. Throughout the 12 days, Kashinsky and Gachet presented daily challenges and advice on different aspects of photography with ample one-on-one time, as well as photo critiquing within the small group, to help participants learn new skills and gain a deeper understanding of their personal shooting style and preferences. “It was exciting to see the clients use the different compositional techniques we taught them and to really understand and see light. Overall, it was an amazing trip and everyone learned and had lots of fun!” said Gachet.

Pete Brackett of Florida, who was on the tour, said, “Galapagos, WOW! This, our third adventure with Active Adventures South America, was unique and exciting and this third one tops them all! Spectacular! Daily packed full of the activities and actions we love, including photography.”

Active Adventures based the Galapagos Photography Adventure on their popular 10-day ‘Tortuga’ Galapagos Land and Sea Adventure. Clients snorkel, dive, hike, cycle and cruise between numerous stunning islands in a comfortable dive boat while accompanied by a local guide throughout. The pace on this Galapagos tour is relaxed yet active and features the luxury of staying on dry land each night in local accommodation.

The next Galapagos Photography Adventure is scheduled for May 2014 and Active Adventures plan on creating more special interest trips.
