Unlike the LAP-BAND, the sleeve gastrectomy does not require the maintenance and adjustment of an implantable device
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 07, 2011
L.A. Bariatrics, a local bariatric practice, is planning to expand its use of a cutting-edge development in weight-loss surgery, and its medical director expects patients to benefit.
Gastric sleeve surgery is a newer procedure than gastric bypass and gastric banding (also known as the Lap-Band). As such, people may know less about it than other surgeries. Dr. Jeremy Korman, the Medical Director and bariatric surgeon of L.A. Bariatrics, says it has advantages for the right patients.
In sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon removes a large portion of the stomach. Once the incision heals, the patient's stomach is the size and shape of a small banana, or sleeve, hence the name. The revised stomach only holds a fraction of its former volume, allowing the patients to eat less and lose weight.
Initially, the gastric sleeve surgery was often employed as the first stage of a two-stage surgery plan, with the patient undergoing a gastric bypass or other surgery several months after sleeve gastrectomy. However, it is an effective procedure in its own right, and is now performed as a standalone surgery. Dr. Korman is happy to present it as an option to L.A. Bariatrics' patients.
"Unlike the LAP-BAND, the sleeve gastrectomy does not require the maintenance and adjustment of an implantable device,” Dr Korman said. “It is at least as safe as gastric bypass, but doesn't involve rerouting of the digestive tract, therefore reducing the potential for vitamin deficiencies.”
Additionally, the gastric sleeve procedure removes the part of the stomach that creates ghrelin, the “hunger hormone”, which some physicians have theorized could further contribute to weight loss.
"It's a powerful tool, and I'm excited to offer it to my patients to help them lose weight and improve their health."
