Load-bearing precast concrete wall panels work as the building structure to take the structural loads without the need for perimeter columns, and in many cases also act as shear walls, simplifying the lateral load analysis

High Performance Insulated Architectural Precast Wall Panels were selected as the exterior system for the new production facility in Rockwall, Texas. The precast concrete walls will be produced in a quality-controlled environment at Gate Precast’s Hillsboro, Texas facility.
The load-bearing façade of the state-of-the-art bakery combines both aesthetic and structural functions. Six different mix designs will be used on the building including accents of cobalt blue, a dominant color in the company’s logo. Integral colored precast gives a distinctive look to the large mass building and is a dependable and economical alternative to higher maintenance surface-applied coatings typically used in industrial applications.
The non-corrosive interior precast concrete walls resist airborne contaminants and abrasion. A smooth, hard-trowel finish will be applied to the interior panels reducing the opportunity for mold growth and providing an easily cleaned surface.
The floor and roof loads will be transferred through the structure into the foundation which simplifies construction and reduces costs.
“Load-bearing precast concrete wall panels work as the building structure to take the structural loads without the need for perimeter columns, and in many cases also act as shear walls, simplifying the lateral load analysis,” said Marshall Bassett, PE, Gate Precast Engineering and Sales.
The load-bearing precast panels were also designed to take advantage of the exceptional thermal performance of insulated concrete sandwich panels. The wall configuration incorporates two inches of continuous polyiso insulation sandwiched between an exterior wythe of three inches and interior wythe of seven inches.
Lastly, and most importantly, precast concrete was chosen to meet an aggressive schedule. In the interest of economic design, the panels were made as large as practical which means, fewer joints, lower erection cost and the number of connections are reduced.
Gate Precast was awarded the project in mid-March. Utilizing two cranes and two crews, Gate Precast will begin installation of over 400 precast panels on July 24 and finish enclosing the structure by the first of October.
The production facility will be completed by December 31, 2012.
