Gate Precast Company, one of the largest precast concrete suppliers in the U.S., has been recognized in the 50th Annual PCI Design Awards Competition for precast design excellence and quality construction on a wide variety of structures.
PCI Design Awards is a long-standing program that recognizes design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete. Sixteen building projects were selected as winners by five independent judges of construction industry experts.
Gate Precast earned best-in-class awards for its work on the following projects:
- Best Justice and Correctional Structures: U.S. Federal Courthouse in Jackson, MS; Architect: H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture (New York, NY)
- Best Custom Solutions: Cityplace Uptown Station in Dallas, Texas; Architect: Good Fulton & Farrell (Dallas, TX)
- All Precast Solution Award: CTA Beach Comfort Stations (4 stations) in Biloxi, MS; Architect: Eley Guild Hardy Architects (Biloxi, MS)
- Best Religious Structure: Kansas City Temple in Kansas City, MO; Architect: FFKR Architects (Salt Lake City, UT)
- Best Government and Public Buildings: Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, TX; Architect: Morphosis (Culver City, CA) and Architect of Record: Good Fulton and Farrell (Dallas, TX)
“Gate Precast is proud to be recognized for these projects which highlight the versatility of precast concrete systems. Our skilled craftsmen are to be commended for their continued dedication to produce superior quality work," said Dean Gwin, President, COO of Gate Precast Company.
The Perot Museum of Nature and Science was also recognized as one of the first winners of the Sidney Freedman Craftsmanship Award which recognizes PCI-Certified plants for excellence in manufacturing and craftsmanship of architectural precast structures.
The naming of the award after Sidney Freedman, PCI Director, Architectural Systems, is an appropriate tribute to his numerous contributions to the architectural precast community, particularly relating to production and quality.
The award’s namesake agreed with the judges that the preproduction planning had to be (and clearly was) extensive for the Perot Museum.
“The complexity of the formwork with many different geometric shapes required tremendous preproduction planning justified the award for the unique design for the Perot Museum -- true craftsmanship!” Freedman said.
Gate Precast joined the Perot Museum’s design team early to assist with the design. Collaboration between the architect and steel fabricator using BIM and webinars ensured the architectural intent was satisfied, joint locations and panel sizes were accurate and connections coordinated. The panels were fabricated at its Hillsboro-based plant.
“The collaboration and innovation involved in the precast design development, engineering, production and erection of The Perot Museum’s exterior elevated precast concrete design to a new level, and we are proud to have been a part of the Morphosis and Balfour Beatty team.” said Todd Petty, VP, Operations Gate Precast, Hillsboro, TX.
Gate Precast also received an Honorable Mention award in the craftsmanship competition for their work creating unusually complex precast concrete panels for the St. Regis Hotel in Atlanta, GA.
