Get away. Get wet. Get really wet! Get it all this year when you head to the New River Gorge for Gauley Season. This year, the season begins Sept. 11 and will run for six weeks, with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers expecting its annual rafting releases to be strong this year.
"The weather this year has been consistent and we should be on schedule for some good whitewater releases from the Summersville Dam on all of the dates set for Gauley," said Jim Schray, senior water management specialist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps lowers the massive Summersville Lake 77 feet to its winter pool each fall. This drawdown creates the high water flows for great whitewater rafting on the Gauley.
Adventure West Virginia Resort partners, Class VI-Mountain River (http://www.class-vi.com) and Rivermen (http://www.rivermen.com) are ready to make your Gauley Season a great one with whitewater trips on the Gauley River and the New River from their updated and renovated Lansing, W. Va., campus.
"Gauley Season this year will be six weekends, from Sept. 11 through Oct. 18," said Dave Arnold, Class VI-Mountain River managing partner. "We are excited about the season because we are offering more packages and more additional outdoor activities than we have in the past."
Brian Campbell, managing partner for Rivermen, said anyone who loves Gauley Season or who thinks they'd love it will be in for great whitewater rafting this year. "This year will be a good year to discover why the Gauley is rated one of the top ten rafting rivers in the world and everyone who comes for this season will have a world-class experience," he said.
Class VI-Mountain River and Rivermen will offer several Gauley packages, including one-day trips on the Upper and Lower Gauley, early bird and sunset trips and two-day plans. There's even a triple-play package for guests who'd like to go for three days in a row. Rafting on the New River will be an option as well.
"We still have plenty of packages, trips and lodging for those who haven't yet reserved their space," Campbell said.
Rivermen and Class VI-Mountain River are offering new and renovated lodging from campsites to cabins and three dining options at the Adventure West Virginia Resort. This year, the companies spend more than $4 million on improvements to the campus.
"Guests can add to their rafting trips with some great land experiences as well," Campbell said. "We encourage visitors to consider the new TreeTops Canopy Tour on the campus as well as the mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, rappelling and paintball activities that we offer. Our customer service staff can set you up for a complete package when you call 800-252-7784 or visit http://www.class-vi.com ."
