GemTalk Systems today announced it has acquired the VMware GemStone/S platform for developing, deploying and managing mission-critical Smalltalk-based applications. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The GemStone/S technologies, which VMware acquired in May 2010, and team will form a new company, GemTalk Systems, led by CEO Dan Ware, whose three decades in the software industry have included executive roles at GemStone Systems since 1994 and management of domestic and worldwide sales operations for Unisys, Mentor Graphics and Logic Modeling.
“The GemTalk Systems team has a rich history of innovation and contribution to the Smalltalk community,” said Mr. Ware. “We have a strong commitment to – and passion for – Smalltalk, and we are completely focused on enhancing and evolving our technologies and services to offer stability, reliability and outstanding support to customers who build and run their mission-critical applications on the GemStone/S platform.”
The Smalltalk system, a precursor to Java, which was originally created in the 1980s, has experienced continuous development throughout the decades, allowing it to become a mission-critical and reliable technology for developing, deploying, and managing high-performance business objects which require 24/7 operations. GemTalk Systems plans to expand its 64-bit Smalltalk platform capability by designing and releasing new and innovative extensions to the core GemStone/S technology.
“VMware believes that GemTalk is a great fit for both GemStone/S customers and the Smalltalk community,” said Charles Fan, senior vice president of R&D, Storage and Application Services, VMware. “We are confident that GemStone/S customers will be in good hands with seamless product support and continued technology enhancements.”
Beginning immediately, GemTalk Systems will sell and market the GemStone/S product offerings and consulting services. The Smalltalk experts at GemTalk Systems will support existing and future customers with the same experience and high quality of service that the industry has come to expect.
