Cynthia McKinney Opponent Hank Johnson Continues to Build Momentum -- Neck and Neck Race Attracts National Attention

Commissioner Hank Johnson’s campaign to unseat Cynthia McKinney in Georgia’s 4th Congressional District has become the most hotly discussed primary in the country. The dark horse candidate has closed the gap between challenger and incumbent, and with strong indications that he has moved to a front-runner position, McKinney’s seat, once considered safe, is in play.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) July 13, 2006 -- Commissioner Hank Johnson’s campaign to unseat Cynthia McKinney in Georgia’s 4th Congressional District has become the most hotly discussed primary in the country. The dark horse candidate has closed the gap between challenger and incumbent, and with strong indications that he has moved to a front-runner position, McKinney’s seat, once considered safe, is in play.

Johnson has attracted widespread attention from media nationwide amid controversy surrounding Cynthia McKinney’s conspicuous absences at consecutive televised debates.

This week, the candidate appeared for the second time on Hannity & Colmes, was featured in the prestigious Congressional Quarterly, and the race was discussed on MSNBC’s The Situation with Tucker Carlson. Johnson’s photograph was featured prominently on the well-known Drudge Report, and C-SPAN will cover the race as the primary approaches, an honor typically bestowed only upon the most competitive campaigns in the country.

“This is the ride of a lifetime,” said Peter Butts, Volunteer Coordinator. “Momentum is the most important thing in politics, and it’s ours. Everyone is talking about this campaign.”

Johnson has made job growth, educational excellence, and affordable healthcare the domestic priorities of his campaign. He anticipates a series of high-profile endorsements to be announced late this week. “I intend to represent the 4th District with integrity, humility, and conviction,” said Johnson.

McKinney, who has been under fire since refusing to face Johnson in two televised debates, has neither publicly explained her absences nor campaigned in her district since the controversy erupted. “They don’t know what hit them,” said Johnson’s press secretary, Barbara Ingram. “They’re totally off-balance.”

Johnson is devoting the week to meeting constituents in the district face-to-face. Kathy Harvey is proprietress of Sarah Belle Boutique & Tea Room and the force behind the development of a Business Improvement District in historic downtown Conyers. Harvey told the campaign, “There needs to be a change. Hank has a proven track record and I believe he is blessed with uncommon wisdom. Rockdale County would be honored to be represented by a man of such character.”

Georgia’s 4th Congressional District includes portions of DeKalb, Gwinnett, and Rockdale counties in metropolitan Atlanta, GA.
