Since 2006, INROADS interns have contributed in many very tangible and measurable ways to the Gerber organization in the areas of operations, finance and supply chain management.

Gerber Scientific, Inc., a world leader in providing sophisticated automated manufacturing systems to the aerospace, apparel, composites, packaging, technical textiles and specialty graphics industries, received the Corporate Conversion Award for the New England region from INROADS, a non-profit organization that prepares diverse, underserved college students for full-time work in corporate environments. The award recognized Gerber for converting the highest percentage of interns to full-time positions in 2011.

Patti Burmahl, senior vice president of Human Resources said, “Gerber is proud to accept this award for the second time in three years. Since 2006, INROADS interns have contributed in many very tangible and measurable ways to the Gerber organization in the areas of operations, finance and supply chain management. All of our INROADS interns spend consecutive summer and winter breaks with us and we look forward to continuing to mentor and hire additional students from this exceptional program.”

Kurt Meyerhardt, senior electrical manufacturing engineer for Gerber, was a mentor to two mechanical engineering students this past summer – Hussan Muse from the University of Connecticut and Jeffrey Soong from Boston University – and was noticeably impressed with the progress made on a sizable project. “In the ten weeks Hussan and Jeff worked at Gerber, they managed to fully review and make changes to more than 150 engineering drawings – a project that has been on our to-do list for some time but which we hadn’t had the resources available to focus on it.”

Two of Gerber’s interns commented on the practical experience they gained during their first-year summer internships. Soong said, “During this summer I became familiar with real-life lean manufacturing practices and was able to use AutoCAD engineering software quite a lot.” Muse added, “I was exposed to the engineering change process and learned how to use the SAP system to locate parts and forecast supply and demand.”

Burmahl added, “Gerber understands that a diverse population promotes creativity and innovation and positions us to meet the demands of our global business. As a result, we actively seek a diverse work force that is able to identify with and respond to our customers’ distinct needs.”

INROADS is the nation’s largest non-profit source of salaried corporate internships, providing underserved students with the business soft skills and competencies necessary to be successful in advanced careers. Nahkia Henry, manager at INROADS noted, “The New England region consists of the Greater Hartford/Springfield, Stamford and Boston areas. It is the most competitive region for INROADS interns with the majority of students maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average. This past summer, we placed 130 students in paid positions across the region.”
