NPD’s Reports on the Importance of Gift Cards This Holiday

Market research company, The NPD Group, Inc.’s, ninth annual survey of consumers’ holiday spending intentions takes a look at the gift card phenomenon.

Market research company, The NPD Group, Inc.’s, ninth annual survey of consumers’ holiday spending intentions takes a look at the gift card phenomenon.

Thirty-four percent of consumers tell NPD that they plan to purchase gift cards this holiday. Of those consumers saying they plan to purchase gift cards, more females (39 percent) than males (30 percent) say they are going to purchase them.

The study also asked how respondents feel about giving a gift versus giving a gift card. Thirty percent of total survey respondents say that they feel it is nicer to give a gift than a gift card. Here, again a larger percent of females (38 percent) say a gift is nicer. Looking through the generations, more 25 to 34 year olds and 55 to 64 year olds, 37 and 40 percent respectively, said that giving a gift is nicer.

Is the availability of gift cards influential in a consumers’ decision to shop a particular store? Twenty-two percent of females say their availability is influential and 27 percent of 65+ year olds say their availability is influential.
