The iconic television series Gilligan’s Island is finally getting the big screen treatment, and no one is more thrilled than Dreama Denver, wife of late Gilligan’s Island star Bob Denver, who passed away in 2005.
“I’m thrilled that a whole new generation will get to know the castaways, and that the original Gilligan fans will get to see the re-imagining of the show”, says Mrs. Denver, who was a young actress when she met Bob as his co-star in a theatre production in the 1970’s and who also appeared in the final “Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island” TV movie in 1981.
Bob and Dreama Denver left the entertainment business except for a few guest appearances by the mid 1980’s to raise their special needs son Colin in Ms. Denver’s home state of West Virginia. She continues to be based in the Mountain State, where she oversees The Denver Foundation helping the families of other special needs children. Dawn Wells, the original Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island, appeared at a November 2009 fundraiser for the charity.
“Although in my heart no one can replace Bob as Gilligan, it’ll be interesting to see how the movie turns out. One thing is certain; whoever the new Gilligan is, he’ll make a whole lot more money for doing that one movie than Bob or the other castaways ever did in their lifetimes; Bob nor the rest of the cast ever received royalties for syndication, video or DVD sales, websites, video games…none of that was even imagined when they shot the TV show”, said Ms. Denver, who also oversees bobdenver.com, where she keeps in touch with Bob’s loyal fans around the globe, and Little Buddy Radio, an FM and online non-profit radio station owned and operated by the Denver Foundation.
Ms. Denver is making a special offer to members of the new Gilligan’s Island cast: “Bob wrote every word of his autobiography Gilligan, Maynard and Me (Denver’s other starring role as Maynard Krebs in “The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis:), and it’s packed with lots of great of behind the scenes info on the original Gilligan’s Island. I’ll be happy to get a copy to them, so they can see how the original Gilligan’s Island team made the magic happen…and find out whether Bob was more of a Ginger or Mary Ann guy.” Gilligan, Maynard and Me is also available exclusively at http://www.bobdenver.com for a donation to the non-profit Denver Foundation.
Dreama Denver has appeared on dozens of major media outlets, and has been called “an energetic, entertaining guest.” For a reviewer copy of Gilligan, Maynard and Me and to request an interview with Ms. Denver, contact Allen Media Strategies Burke Allen at (703) 589-8960 or burke(at)allenmediastrategies(dot)com.
