September 5 2011, Labor day weekend, marked the day of Soul Train’s 40th anniversary celebration. The concert, involving the legendary music television show, “Soul Train” and an incredible grouping of Chicago artists including the members of The Glen Traeger Orchestra. In partnership with the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture, Amtrack hosted Chicago’s party of the century that packed Chicago’s Millenium Park Venue.
Don Cornelius, the founder and host of Chicago’s very own, “Soul Train”, was the guest of honor at the event. Soul Train musicians and vocalists entertained 20,000 fans who all collaborated to partake in the philanthropic event. Glen Traeger, and the Glen Traeger Orchestra, performed several music numbers at the event. Glen Traeger Orchestra backed up performers such as, “The Ice Man Jerry Butler, The Impressions, The Chi Lites, The Emotions, Gene Chandler and others.
The September 5th event marked the ending of a weekend-filled number of affairs honoring the 40th anniversary. Prior events included the final weekend of the Soul Train Photo Exhibition at Expo 72, press conferences, and interviews with the renowned Don Cornelius himself.
At 6:30 pm on Labor Day eve, the some 20,000 fans packed the Jay Pritzker stadium awaiting the show. By 7:00, performers stepped on the stage to perform one of the most avant-garde musical shows Chicago has ever seen. Soul Train artists sang and performed their very most loved and famous numbers; they collaborated with Glen Traeger Orchestra’s musicians whose background music alluded to an interactive dancing experience for all attendees.
40th Anniversary Host and Legendary founder of Soul Train, Don Cornelius did not know at the time that this anniversary event would be his last. The talented musician died on February 1st, leaving millions of fans heartbroken. “The event was incredible. It is one I will always remember; I will never forget how enthusiastic the crowd was, and how aesthetically beautiful the stadium was on that night. Moreover, I will never forget Don Cornelius and how he charismatically led the show, entertaining every member of the stadium. I, along with the musicians from my orchestra, send out our condolences to Soul Train for their loss of Don Cornelius.
