On January 7th, 2010, Google, Inc. raised its offer to On2 Technologies, Inc., hoping to close the deal on a merger with the video compression technology company. This isn't just good news for On2 shareholders, but could be a boon for savvy small businesses as well. SEO consultant Eric McGehearty thinks the Google video deal will have an impact on online searches.
“I see Google pushing video as a larger component in search results,” says McGehearty, who owns Globe Runner SEO, a search engine marketing and website optimization company. McGehearty, who’s been tracking the relevance of video in search results, is now encouraging his clients to include properly formatted videos in their websites.
Proper formatting is key to video marketing, says McGehearty— and that formatting includes closed captioning. “Because Google will be looking at all content, it’s important to have captioning, and it’s another reason to make certain to include alt tags on all graphics.” He’s happy to encourage his small business SEO clients to add this technology: “Not only is this of value to business by making there videos and sites more searchable, it increases website access for people with disabilities.”
