It's easy to take great flavor for granted, but those who suffer from celiac disease know how much a lack of good dining options can negatively impact one's quality of life
Detroit, MI (PRWEB) May 09, 2013
Detroit Style Pizza Co. today announced its Gluten-Free Pizza Deal, good for 15 percent off of all gluten-free pizzas ordered during Celiac Awareness Month – May 2013. Those who suffer from celiac disease, gluten allergy and gluten sensitivity can enjoy Detroit Style Pizza Co.'s gluten-free pizza recipes without worry of the pain and discomfort associated with eating gluten-containing food. The Gluten-Free Pizza Deal is available at Detroit Style Pizza Co.'s three Metro Detroit locations and via mail order nationwide.
People with celiac disease, gluten allergy and gluten sensitivity make a lifelong commitment to restrict dietary intake of gluten, a protein present in wheat, barley and rye. It has been estimated that one in every 133 people have celiac disease, and that more than 20 million people in the United States – or seven percent of the entire population – suffer from gluten sensitivity. Many are forced to forgo favorite foods or settle for bland gluten-free alternatives.
World Champion Pizza Maker and Detroit Style Pizza Co. President Shawn Randazzo crafted his gluten-free pizza recipe after his wife, Keri, was diagnosed with celiac disease. Disappointed by so many bland, flavorless gluten-free pizzas, Randazzo set out to create a gluten-free pizza recipe that is as delicious as his original World Champion Detroit Style Pizza.
“Developing a delicious gluten-free recipe that meets the high standards we set with our award-winning Detroit Style Pizza was a personal challenge I'm proud to have met,” said Randazzo. “My wife and I tried dozens of gluten-free pizzas, but every one tasted terrible and had a dry, thin, papery crust. They made your teeth squeak. It was like eating crackers. That's not what you expect or want from pizza, so I decided to develop my own recipe so people who suffer from celiac disease and other gluten-related conditions can enjoy a flavorful pizza that has a filling crust. Detroit Style Pizza Co. gluten-free pizza is the result of that effort, and it's a recipe we love and are proud to share with others.”
The key to a delicious gluten-free pizza is the dough, as most other pizza ingredients are naturally gluten-free. In 2012 Randazzo was named World Champion Pizza Maker, the international pizza industry's most prestigious title, which uniquely qualified him to create a game-changing gluten-free pizza recipe. In addition to using gluten-free ingredients, Detroit Style Pizza Co. takes great care to prevent gluten contamination in the kitchen.
It only takes 1/64 of a teaspoon of gluten to cause small intestinal inflammation; and as such gluten contamination is a common problem in restaurant kitchens where many different dishes are rapidly prepared. The Detroit Style Pizza Co. kitchen features two separate food prep areas, one for gluten-free ingredients, the other for gluten ingredients, which are also stored separately. In addition, Detroit Style Pizza Co. uses separate utensils for gluten-containing and gluten-free ingredients, and employees are specifically trained in proper gluten-free food preparation.
“It's easy to take great flavor for granted, but those who suffer from celiac disease know how much a lack of good dining options can negatively impact one's quality of life,” said Randazzo. “I'm proud to offer a gluten-free pizza that celiac sufferers truly love, because I know first-hand that for some people, finding a great-tasting that won't cause discomfort is like finding a treasure.”
Detroit Style Pizza Co. offers two styles of gluten-free pizzas: small Detroit Style Square (four pieces) and small Pan Style Round (six pieces). The pizzas are available at Detroit Style Pizza Co.'s Roseville, Clinton Township and St. Clair Shores locations; and any Detroit Style Pizza Co. mail order pizza package can be made gluten-free and shipped to anywhere in the continental U.S. Gluten-free cheese breadsticks are also available.
The Detroit Style Pizza Co. Gluten-Free Pizza Deal will be available for the entirety of Celiac Awareness Month, May 2013.
