One month can make a difference for individuals and families who may not have been aware that there was a deadline to file. Every day matters when it comes to issues of this magnitude.

According to an article published by CBS News on Nov. 17, the deadline to file claims over accidents caused by General Motors’ (GM) defective ignition switches has been extended to Jan. 31, 2015. According to CBS, Kenneth Feinberg, the attorney responsible for compensating victims of crashes caused by faulty ignition switches, is giving individuals and families another month to file their claims “out of an abundance of caution.”*
“We are glad Feinberg decided to extend the deadline,” said Cary McDonald, Partner at Flood Law Group LLP. “One month can make a difference for individuals and families who may not have been aware that there was a deadline to file. Every day matters when it comes to issues of this magnitude.”
According to CBS, GM has already taken heat after the family of a Connecticut woman who was killed in a crash involving a defective ignition switch said it was never notified by the company of its right to collect compensation. So far, nearly 4.5 million notices have been sent to current and former owners of affected vehicles.*
According to an article published on Nov. 17 by Reuters, Feinberg’s office has linked 33 deaths to the faulty ignition switches and has approved compensation in each instance. Since the program began accepting claims on Aug. 1, it has received 2,105 claims alleging serious injuries and deaths.**
