Zakiya Randall Is the Youngest Nominee for 2007 Atlanta Sports Award
Randall, golfing phenom, among top three amateur athletes at annual gala.
Atlanta (PRWEB) February 23, 2007 -- Zakiya Randall (www.zakiyarandall.com), a fast rising star in the golf world, has capped off a great year with a nomination for an Atlanta Sports Award. Randall, 15, was the youngest nominee vying for Amateur Athlete of the Year at the black-tie awards gala at the Fox Theatre on February 15. The Atlanta Sports Awards are handed out by the Atlanta Sports Council.
"I'm thrilled to be recognized in my home community," Zakiya Randall said. "The Atlanta Sports Awards is a great way to celebrate a great city."
Zakiya Randall is quickly gaining worldwide attention as golf's next big star. Last May, she qualified for the LPGA qualifying event at Roswell, GA. The competitive field included LPGA pros and highly touted amateurs from across the country. Not happy just to get autographs from her heroes, Randall rung up the lowest score and earned the event medal for her performance. Last summer, Randall, won the overall junior girls championship at the 51st annual Mid-West National Championship in Lima, Ohio and was the top junior girl from Georgia at the Burgett H. Mooney Rome Classic in August.
Randall took up golf at the age of 10 and after winning a series of tennis tournaments. She was immediately successful, winning player of the year honors from the Atlanta Junior Golf Association in her first year. Between 2002 and 2005, Randall won player of the year awards in a number of junior golf associations, won tournaments in Florida and South Carolina and became a member of the PGA Hole in One club. Zakiya's rise has been noted by such PGA stars as Calvin Peete, Sergio Garcia, Stewart Cink and Lee Elder.
At only 15, Randall has accomplished more than some players achieve in their entire careers. She hopes to take the next step and play for a premier University. For now, her bedroom walls are covered with pictures of her heroes: Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie. It's only a matter time before for a new generation of golf fans places her picture alongside those greats.
