Velocitude today announced the acceptance by Google of an enhancement for their Android™ Barcode Scanner application which permits users of Android™ mobile devices, such as the Droid and Nexus One™, to scan barcodes.

The application supports initiation of a barcode scan via a web link including destination specification of the scanning results and the allowed barcode formats.

“This means that we can add barcode scanning to any site (when viewed from an Android™ device) and then process the results of the scan in any method we choose, including utilizing it for product lookups or on-premises navigation” said Martin Flack, Velocitude CTO.

Prior to this enhancement, the only website capable of initiating a full round-trip barcode scan was Google Product Search. The update developed by Velocitude makes this functionality available for use by anyone who knows the proper invocation instructions and adds the ability to set accepted barcode formats as part of the request.

Velocitude has successfully integrated barcode product search into their clients' mobile sites. By utilizing the barcode support retailers can insure 100% product coverage and increased speed for their mobile clients.

“Any retailer that wishes to have a mobile web site which allows Android™ devices to barcode scan a product to access extended package and purchase information may do so using Velocitude's Mobile Platform on the retail side and leveraging Google's OS barcode technology for end-user access” said Mr. Flack. “Additionally, we are actively working on similar support of bar code scanning for other mobile platforms”.

The soon to be released version of the Android Application is being developed as a part of Google’s ZXing Project. Customers of Tiger Direct can utilize the application as soon as it is released. Once installed users will be able to use the barcode search feature on Velocitude powered mobile websites. All Android™ device owners with the application installed will receive a notification of the update.

Users who do not yet have the application installed will be given the opportunity to download and install it when they first click a barcode search link.
