Dr. Thom Mayer is a recognized expert in emergency medicine, pediatric emergency medicine, trauma, and healthcare leadership. Dr. Mayer is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Best Practices, Inc., and Medical Director for Studer Group for over 10 years. Dr. Mayer also serves as the Medical Director for the NFL Players Association, where his leadership has transformed the care of athletes.
Among his accomplishments, on September 11, 2001, he served as one of the command physicians of the Pentagon Rescue Operation and has served the Department of Defense on the Defense Science Board Task Forces on Bioterrorism, Homeland Security, and Consequences of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Dr. Mayer has published 100 peer-reviewed articles, 120 book chapters and edited or written 20 textbooks on emergency medicine, including Leadership for Great Customer Service: Satisfied Patients, Satisfied Employees, Leadership for Smooth Patient Flow, Hardwiring Flow, and the definitive text, Strauss and Mayer's Emergency Department Leadership: Principles and Applications. Mayer's academic appointments include Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at George Washington University and University of Virginia Schools of Medicine, as well as a Senior Lecturing Fellow at Duke University. His work with Dr. Kirk Jensen is widely recognized as the most innovative on emergency department and hospital-wide flow.

He is the Keynote Speaker for ACEP's Emergency Department Director's Academy(EDDA) and is the Chief Editor of the landmark textbook, Emergency Department Management: Principles and Practices. Dr. Mayer holds degrees from Hanover College, the University of Utah and Duke University School of Medicine.
