Following the announcement on October 21st of the short list of authors for Canada's 72nd Governor General's Literary Awards, juries now have the task of selecting the worthy winners from the 70 finalists. David Adams Richards/The Lost Highway priced 5.000* (bet $1 to return $5) and Nino Ricci/ The Origin of Species at 6.000*(bet $1 to return $6), also featured on this year's Giller long list, but neither were selected for the final four. Fred Stenson/The Great Karro, is an experienced writer who specialises in 'cowboys, horses, landscape' and was shortlisted for the 2000 Giller Prize which Adams Richards won, but is regarded as a long shot by, priced 12.990* (bet $1 to return $12.99).

As a debutante in the Governor General's Awards, Rivka Galchen/Atmospheric Disturbances, is also considered an outsider for the English fiction award by at odds of 12.490* (bet $1 to return $12.49) , but her 'funny journey inside a mistaken mind' is regarded as a brilliant first novel.

The most recognisable name on the 2008 Governor General's Literary Award for French fiction short list is Marie-Claire Blais/Naissance de Rebecca à l'ère des tourments, an evergreen author, who is 2.760* favourite (bet $1 to return $2.76) to win a record fourth Governor General's Award. Jean-François Beauchemin/Ceci est mon corps established himself with highly regarded stories about childhood but has produced 'a portrait of a human, modern Jesus' - he is rated a 4.500* chance (bet $1 to return $4.50) along with Guillaume Corbeil/L'art de la fugue an ethereal collection of short stories from the youngest finalist in the fiction category.

Monique Proulx/Champagne known in Western Canada, as 'une grande dame de literature' is priced 5.250* (bet $1 to return $5.25), while Jean-Pierre Trépanier/Colomia is one of the most interesting finalists. A prison librarian for 15 years, his experiences form the continued basis for his work; Trepanier is a 9.750* chance (bet $1 to return $9.750).
