The survey results are clear: rather than waiting to be overrun by more mobile users and mobile applications, state and local governments should proactively manage mobility using the best practices, such as those developed by BoxTone.
Columbia, MD (PRWEB) March 15, 2010
BoxTone(R), the expert in mobile user management, today announced the results of a Government Technology national survey of state and local CIOs, IT executives and agency management regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of their mobile device platforms.
Conducted in partnership with BoxTone, the Smartphone Management Survey found that while state and local governments recognize the challenges of more devices and mobile applications, most agencies lack the proactive mobile user management tools to respond to these challenges effectively, and at the lowest cost.
According to the survey, securing an increasingly diverse and growing mobile platform is proving difficult. While 60 percent of respondents require mobile government professionals to sign a pledge to adhere to a mobile device usage policy, nearly 70 percent cannot identify devices running applications that fall outside IT policy. In addition, only 27 percent of agencies report having tools that can remotely wipe or lock agency-connected devices that fall outside IT policy, and then confirm the success of those actions.
Effectively budgeting for a growing mobile platform is also an emerging challenge, with less than half of all respondents saying they have access to detailed, user-level data about the total cost of supporting a mobile user. Fewer still, less than 25 percent, report offering their mobile users a self-service and troubleshooting portal, which along with other automated mobile management technologies is proven to lower IT support costs.
“As more state and local government professionals embrace mobility to more effectively serve taxpayers, agency IT staff are under the gun to maintain superior, secure mobile service at the lowest cost,” said Alan Snyder, CEO, BoxTone. “The lesson of this Government Technology national survey is clear: rather than waiting to be overrun by more mobile users and mobile applications, state and local governments should proactively manage mobility using the best practices, such as those developed by BoxTone.”
