Tulsa personal injury lawyer Hansen Dirani, of Hansen Dirani & Associates, is accepting potential cases related to possible violations of federal regulations by company Fresenius Medical Care.

Dirani said a failure to warn customers or medical providers about safety concerns is troubling. He urges individuals who were affected by GranuFlo side effects to contact a personal injury lawyer promptly to learn about their legal rights.

Drug injury lawyer Hansen Dirani is alerting dialysis patients about a potentially lethal risk linked to a product called GranuFlo, which is marketed by Fresenius Medical Care.

A GranuFlo lawsuit may be necessary for patients who have suffered adverse side effects, including heart problems or cardiac arrest after undergoing dialysis, Dirani said.

According to a report in The New York Times, German medical company Fresenius is under investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The agency is looking into whether Fresenius violated federal regulations by failing to inform customers of a product risk related to GranuFlo. The product contains an ingredient that a dialysis patient’s body uses to convert to bicarbonate. The newspaper reports that GranuFlo contains more of the ingredient than rival products.

According to the Times, many doctors have not accounted for the extra ingredient when prescribing bicarbonate separately, which can lead to an overdose of bicarbonate. Some studies suggest that too much bicarbonate can lead to heart problems, according to the Times.

While Fresenius notified doctors working in its own dialysis centers, the company failed to warn doctors working in other dialysis centers about the risk, according to the Times.

The Times reported that dialysis centers throughout the nation are checking bicarbonate levels in patients and adjusting doses if necessary. One doctor told the newspaper that 30 percent of patients at a St. Louis dialysis center had higher-than-normal bicarbonate levels.

The FDA could issue a warning letter to Fresenius Medical Care if the agency determines that the company should have reported the safety concerns, according to the Times.
