We’re so excited about having the Flood Sisters as one of our newest members. They are the epitome of the types of organizations we would like to help.

When most people think of Craigslist, they think of a classifieds website where they can sell their cars or find a job. But to three sisters in New York City, Craigslist was the answer to saving a loved one’s life. Now The Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation of America, which helps find organs for those in dire need, has teamed with Grassroots.org, becoming the Salt Lake City-based nonprofit’s 5,000th member.

The Flood sisters helped Grassroots.org reach the halfway mark in its quest to provide 10,000 non-profit organizations with $10,000 worth of services each year. Grassroots.org pairs its non-profit members with companies wanting to donate business services to the community. Over the past decade the group has helped nonprofits save more than $4 million by providing Web hosting, graphic design, telephone services, search engine optimization and Internet public relations.

The Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation of America specializes in finding living kidney donors for patients on the crowded organ transplant waiting list.

“We’ve used Craigslist for networking, job searching, selling jewelry and furniture, and finding child care. So we decided to post an ad for altruistic kidney donors for our father in the volunteer section. Since we had such great responses and such great successes in the past, we thought, ‘let’s see what response we get,’” said Jennifer Flood, president of The Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation of America. “We came up with the idea for the foundation after people started calling in wanting to help after seeing the media coverage we received while trying to find a donor for our dad . . . That’s how we built our foundation’s registry.”

The website for The Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation of America has an internal social network that allows donors and patients to interact and connect.

“We were really attracted to Grassroots.org because of their focus on technology,” Flood said. “In the new age you have to be tech savvy in order to run your business and be effective, especially in the non-profit world. You have to think outside the box, be determined and aggressive. We saw that at Grassroots.org and liked how they were really focused on helping other foundations use technology to change the world.”

Flood explained that Grassroots.org’s search engine optimization and public relations services were most appealing to The Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation of America.

“We’re so excited about having the Flood Sisters as one of our newest members,” Grassroots.org Executive Director Ray Henderson said. “They are the epitome of the types of organizations we would like to help.”
