International law firm Greenberg Traurig, P.A. represented Rowland Coffee Roasters, Inc., a privately-held company based in Miami, in the $360 million sale of its coffee brands and business operations to The J.M. Smucker Company, a leading marketer and manufacturer of fruit spreads, retail packaged coffee, peanut butter, shortening and oils, ice cream toppings, sweetened condensed milk and health and natural food beverages in North America. Rowland’s products are sold under the leading Hispanic brands Café Bustelo® and Café Pilon®.

Greenberg Traurig’s team for Rowland Coffee was led by Patricia Menéndez-Cambó, Chair of Greenberg Traurig's Global Practice Group, shareholders Randy A. Bullard, Alexandra Aguirre, Enrique J. Martin, and associates Enrique A. Conde and Edilsa Ruiz, all of whom are in the firm’s Miami office. “It was a pleasure representing a Miami-based U.S.-Hispanic company in the sale of its family business with historical roots dating back to the 1860s in Cuba,” Bullard said.

Oscar Vila of Vila Padron & Diaz P.A., long-time counsel to the company and the shareholders of the Rowland Coffee group of companies, served as co-counsel. Vila Padron & Diaz P.A. is a boutique law firm specializing in representing U.S.-Hispanic businesses throughout the United States. "By the year 2050, nearly one quarter of the U.S. population is expected to be Hispanic. We believe that companies and products targeting this population will be well-positioned both today and in the future,” Vila said.

Rowland Coffee Roasters, Inc., formed in 1962, was founded by Jose A. Souto. The company acquired Café Pilon in 1968, and eventually acquired Café Bustelo, Café Oquendo, Medaglia d’Oro and El Pico from the Tetley Group in 2000. Rowland Coffee Roasters, Inc. is a leading producer of espresso coffee and the largest Hispanic coffee company in the U.S.
